WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today voted in favor of $300 million in assistance for Haiti, which was included in the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010 (H.R. 3081). Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“My recent trip to Haiti showed me how important it is for the United States to continue our support to this struggling nation. This bill provides $300 million in badly needed assistance for the Haitian people.”
“The U.S. must be fully committed to recovery and rebuilding efforts in Haiti. I voted for this bill to demonstrate that we are in it for the long haul”.
“Additionally, I continue to strongly support Temporary Protective Status (TPS), to Haitians currently living in the U.S., so that they may be allowed to remain in our country while Haiti makes progress towards recovery.”
Note: Ros-Lehtinen was part of a bipartisan request to provide $350 million in assistance to Haiti in the FY2010 State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act. Ros-Lehtinen has also sent multiple letters to the current and former Administration supporting the designation of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians currently living in the United States.
