US ELECTIONS - Who Will Bell Hillary?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Robert D. Novak

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Even before Sen. Barack Obama won his ninth-straight contest against Sen. Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin last Tuesday, wise old heads in the Democratic Party were asking this question: Who will tell her that it’s over, that she cannot win the presidential nomination and the sooner she leaves the race the more it will improve chances of defeating Sen. John McCain in November?

In an ideal though unattainable world, Clinton would have dropped out when it became clear even before Wisconsin that she could not be nominated. The nightmare scenario was that she would win in Wisconsin, claiming a “comeback” that would propel her to narrow victories in Texas and Ohio March 4. That still would not cut her a path to the nomination. Telling her then to end her candidacy and avoid a bloody battle stretch-ing to the party’s Denver national convention might not be achievable.

The Democratic dilemma recalls the Republican problem, in a much different context, 34 years ago, when GOP graybeards asked: “Who will bell the cat?” — go to Richard M. Nixon and inform him he had lost his support in the party and must resign the presidency. Sen. Barry Goldwater successfully performed that mission in 1974, but there is no Goldwater facsimile in today’s Democratic Party (except for Sen. Ted Kennedy, who could not do it because he has endorsed Obama).

Clinton’s rationale for remaining a candidate is the Texas-Ohio parlay on March 4, with pre-Wisconsin polls giving her a comfortable lead in both states. But Texas has become a dead heat, and her Ohio margin is down to single digits. Gov. Ted Strickland, Clinton’s leading endorser in Ohio, is reported following the Wisconsin returns to privately have expressed concern as to whether he could hold the state for her in the ensuing two weeks. If she ekes out a win in Ohio while losing Texas, who then will bell Hillary?

The inevitability of Clinton becoming the first female president was based on her dominance over weak fields in both parties. McCain was the one Republican who worried Democratic strategists, and he appeared dead three months ago. Mitt Romney, the then-likely Republican nominee, was viewed in Democratic cir-cles as unelectable.

Obama’s improbable candidacy always worried Clinton insiders, which explains the whispering campaign that the Illinois neophyte would prove vulnerable to Republican onslaught as the presidential nominee. That private assault continues to this day, with Obama described as a latter-day George McGovern whose career record of radical positions will prove easy prey for GOP attack dogs.

But Clinton could not go before Democratic primary voters and assail Obama for being too far to the left. Instead, she insinuated moral turpitude by asserting that Obama had not been “vetted.” When that back fired, she claimed plagiarism by Obama in lifting a paragraph from a speech by his friend and supporter Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick — an approach that yielded mainly derisive laughter among politicians.

I listened in on last Wednesday’s news media conference calls by Clinton campaign managers Mark Penn and Harold Ickes in the wake of her Wisconsin drubbing. Incredibly, they were hawking the same plagiarism charge that had proved ineffective. Clinton herself raised the bogus issue again in Thursday night’s debate from Austin and was rewarded with boos from the Democratic audience.

Clinton’s burden is not only Obama’s charisma but also McCain’s resurrection. Some of the same Democrats who short months ago were heralding her as the “perfect” candidate now call her a sure loser against McCain, saying she would do the party a favor by just leaving.

Clinton’s tipping point may have come when it was announced that her $5 million loan to her campaign came from a joint fund she shares evenly with Bill Clinton. That puts into play for the general election business deals by the former president that had transformed him from an indigent to a multimillionaire and excite interest in their income tax returns, which the Clintons refuse to reveal. The prospect impels many Democratic insiders to pray for clear Obama victories on March 4 that they hope will make it unnecessary for anybody to beg Hillary Clinton to end her failed campaign.

Monsieur le Premier Ministre
Jacques Edouard Alexis
En ses Bureaux.-

Excellence,

Cultural Project in Bel Air to help fight gangs.

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Last February 19th, 2008, local officials launched a project involving cultural activities in the district of Belair (district once controlled by gangs) that is aimed to revalorize the district which is located at the center of the capital by the promotion of the artistic and artisan production.

The project, financed by the inter-American Bank of development (Bid) cost US$12,000, implies, the “National Commission of Disarmament, Dismantling and Reintegration (Cnddr)”, the town hall of “Port-au-Prince” and the AfricAmerica Foundation. This project goal is to help discover the artists and craftsmen of the Bel Air, indicates the artist Barbara Prézeau Stephenson, president of the AfricAmérica Foundation.

The image of this district, high historical place of the capital, was tarnished these last years, because of the presence of armed bands which operated there. A survey carried out in the Bel Air by the team of Barbara Prézeau Stephenson, in November 2007, made it possible to count more than 900 workshops of artists and craftsmen. 27% of them are specialized craftsmen. The carpenters and cabinetmakers account for 22%, the workers of the textile 18% and the shoe-makers 13%. Among those surveyed, a 93 year old man continues to manufacture saddles of horse.

Barbara Prézeau Stephenson announced the creation of funds to support and promote the artistic production of Bel Air and the creation of a web site to promote the production world wide.

“This project will succeed if and only it allows the artists and craftsmen of Bel Air to generate incomes, to have a greater economic comfort”, Alix Fils-Aime supports, president of Cnddr.

As for Nadege Augustin, Assistant Major of the city of Port-with-Prince representing the city, she states of the importance to develop the artistic production among the young people. “Our culture is a tool which makes it possible for all citizen to be integrated and be part of society”, underlines she brilliantly said.

A protocol of agreement was also signed between Association “Kòdinasyon Atis ak Atizan Bèlè” (Coordination of the Artists and Artisans of the Bel Air - KAABEL) and the Town hall of Port-with-Prince. Mario Calixte, born in the district, one of the leaders of this coordination, pleads in favor of support for the artists and craftsmen of the Bel Air. He believes they will benefit a lot from this project.

First Aid Symbols - You need to Know specially for those who travel.

Friday, February 15th, 2008

First aid symbols are very powerful symbols and most people don’t realize just how powerful these pictures can be. The most easily recognized symbol is the first aid moniker, which is world known.

Below are some tips to help you learn the first aid symbols so that you can identify them easily.

What Does the Symbol Look Like?

If you’re unfamiliar with the first aid symbol, it looks a lot like a cross or a plus sign with equal length lines. This symbol can be found in a variety of colors, though it is seen most often in red and white (with the lines being red and the background white) or in blue and white (with the arms in white and the background in blue). If you go to the American Red Cross site, you will be able to see what the sign looks like and how it is used in various parts of the world.

Finding Help When You Need It

When you don’t have a map readily available, being able to recognize the first aid symbol is crucial to your safety – especially when you are traveling. Since most cities will post signs to their local first aid clinics and hospitals, you need to be able to discern these from other signs that might be posted. Look for these signs along main roads in the area or along highways and express routes.

Drawing for Help

If you can’t find the signs that include the first aid symbol, you might want to draw this symbol in order to get others to point you in the right direction. By saying ‘hospital’ and then showing locals the symbol, you should be able to get to a medical facility quite easily in most countries of the world. You might want to draw out this symbol ahead of time to have it in your wallet or purse for easy access and for easy display to others you might call upon for help.

Other Versions of the First Aid Symbol

You might also recognize the symbol for first aid with green and white colors – green for the background and white for the cross itself. Or the blue and white colored symbol can have the snake symbol from medicine illustrations. Individual hospitals and medical professionals also have their own first aid insignia that can help you determine their ability to help you.

When it comes to helping you, the first aid symbol can alert you to medical facilities as well as to find medical personnel in a crowd – no matter where you are. They are very useful for the population. We encourage majors of all cities in the world to put up first aid symbols to help identify their city first aid facilities.

We All encounter First Aid Scenarios.

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008
[carpwp:amazon{First Aid}][/carpwp]

Because you’ll probably encounter at least one in your lifetime, it is important to recognize Common First Aid Scenarios. It is difficult to predict the unexpected, you can learn about basic first aid scenarios so that you know what to do. Though you might see televisions shows and read books about medical dramas that include complicated injuries and diseases, chances are slim that you will ever need this level of expertise. You will find below some common first aid scenarios and how to deal with them - for a complete guide on first aid Visit The Complete Red Hat First Aid GuideCuts and Scrapes

No matter how they happen, cuts and scrapes are still the most common first aid scenarios in any situation. Because life comes with sharp edges, your skin is simply going to get torn from time to time. The main thing to be concerned about when this happens is infection. You need to make sure you are cleaning out the wound as much as you can with warm and soapy water. If you don’t have any water on hand, try to use an antibacterial gel or wipe to help remove dirt and germs. Once you have done this, cover the wound up to prevent further infection and monitor for redness, swelling, and warmth.

In the case of a large gash, you will want to apply pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding first before cleaning the area. The body should be able to clot the blood and stop the bleeding within 10 minutes or so, but if this isn’t happening, you need to seek medical attention. These kinds of cuts will probably need stitches or medication.

Heatstroke/Frostbite

If you’re out in nature at any given point of the year, you need to realize that heatstroke and frostbite can happen. These first aid scenarios might not be as dramatic as a broken bone or a gash, but they can turn from problematic to life threatening in minutes. Here are the signs you need to watch out for:

Heatstroke

• Mental confusion
• Lack of sweating
• High body temperature

In this case, you need to douse the person in water as well as try to have them take a sip or two of water each minute. This will help to cool the body and prevent damage to the cells. You don’t want to give the person a lot of water to drink as they are prone to vomiting at this point which will only dehydrate them further.

Frostbite

• Loss of feeling in extremities
• Fatigue
• White or blackened fingertips, ears, nose, etc.

For frostbite, you need to cover the area as much as you can to keep it warm. If you can, run tepid water over the area to start warming it back up, but not hot water as this can cause more damage as the nerves are deadened and won’t be able to feel a burn.

Both of these first aid scenarios can only be managed by you until help arrives – medical assistance will be necessary.
