Stephen Sorkin, Manager S&I Engineering at Splunk and hist dog Abe demonstrate how to measure and visualize the CPU resources that each index-time component consumes when Splunk fires up its search pipeline. Actually Sorkin does the demo, but that's only because dogs can't type.
In this talk, we introduce the concept of summary indexing. This is a general technique to achieve high performance reporting on massive data sets. To motivate the problem, we dissect the specific example of reporting on the distribution of referrers over time in web access log style datasets.
