The colour at the end was added by duplicating the main layer, setting it to multiply and adding base colours to a layer underneath that. I didn't show in detail how I did it because I spent most of the time using the polygonal lasso tool and it's boring to watch.

First I make a basic face showing the placement of features, then I make some other faces by skewing with the original face's proportions.
